Shopping in Kalkan

The narrow winding streets of the old town offer many opportunities for both the dedicated and casual shopper.

Traditional hand made carpets in vibrant colours and patterns peculiar to the village in which they were made are plentiful as well as less expensive kilims, rugs and cushions. Hand beaten metal lamps and plates, hand painted tiles and plates and beautiful glassware are also displayed in the shops lining the main and side streets. Bargains are to be found too, gold and silver jewellery and leather goods can be bought at prices lower than to be found in Europe. Much of the jewellery is made locally in both modern and traditional designs which means that what you buy is truly unique.

The local market is held every Thursday where the vegetables in season are displayed in great quantity. Cheese, olives and spices can be bought as well as household goods and ‘genuine copies’ of famous name T-shirts, jeans and watches!

There are sophisticated boutiques in town selling clothes, handbags and accessories and several tailors selling clothes they have made. These tailors will be only too willing to make items to your specification or copy a favourite garment in a different material.

On a more mundane level, there are several supermarkets selling everything you might need for self catering as well as English newspapers. In short, whether you are shopping for daily provisions, presents or mementoes to take home (or just wanting to treat yourself) there is something for everyone in the shops of Kalkan.
