Kalkan

Kalkan lies on the Turquoise Coast of Turkey. Originally a vitally important port in the Ottoman Empire due to it being the only safe harbour between Kaş and Fethiye, it is now one of the most popular and sophisticated holiday destinations in the region.

This popularity is due to several elements. The old town has been protected by strict building regulations and its Greek and Turkish origins are reflected in the architecture. Narrow streets wind up from the harbour and are lined by traditional stone houses with timbered balconies. Many of these have their ground floors converted to sophisticated shops and on their roofs are restaurants which offer amazing views of the harbour, the town against the backdrop of the Taurus Mountains. The vivid flowers of the bougainvillea plants which tumble down from the balconies add to the colour and vibrancy. Along the side streets which crisscross the town are houses and courtyards which have been lovingly preserved and restored. Cars are excluded from the town during the summer months so guests can wander through the maze of streets in peace and safety.

Within easy travelling distance from Kalkan are many historic sites which illustrate the varied history of the Lycian region. Beach clubs, some with water sports, are accessible by complimentary water taxis from the harbour and the renowned Kaputas Beach is a mere 4 km from Kalkan. Patara beach is also nearby – a spectacular 14km stretch of golden sand and a protected nature reserve. Once a Lycian port, the remains of Patara harbour and other architectural ruins can be explored. Boat trips around the islands and coves of the bay can be arranged at the harbour, a relaxing way to spend a day with lunch provided too.

In the evening Kalkan becomes a bustling and colourful combination of restaurants, shops and bars. Discerning diners can choose from menus provided by the chefs from many regions of Turkey who have settled here. There are specialised fish restaurants and those offering Mediterranean cuisine as well as the traditional fare of the region which is varied and delicious; many of the restaurants have roof terraces which take full advantage of the local scenery. Shops line the narrow streets and traditional items such as carpets, antiques, ceramics and pottery can be bought as well as the gold and silver jewellery and leather items, available at prices far lower than those to be found in Europe.

The main attraction for many visitors however, many of whom return regularly, is the friendliness and welcome offered by the Kalkan people. Their interest in, and concern for their visitors is genuine and universal. They take pride in getting to know their guests and nothing seems to be too much trouble. Visitors to other areas or bigger resorts may have experienced oppressive approaches to potential customers, but in Kalkan there is a far more personal and hassle free welcome waiting. They are a proud people with strong family values and new visitors are often surprised and delighted by the warmth and the extent of their welcome; there is a real sense of a community which embraces tourism.

There is so much more than a ‘sunshine holiday’ to be experienced in Kalkan. If you are new to the town, please do not hesitate to ask for further details of the many delights and attractions the area has to offer. We would be only too pleased to share our knowledge and love of Kalkan with you.
