Places of interest

Xanthos – About seventeen km west of Kalkan lie the ancient ruins of Xanthos, the administrative centre of Lycia.

Patara – Close to Xanthos can be found the ruins of the most significant Lycian harbour. Also at Patara is a beautiful twenty klm stretch of beach. Find out in more detail here.

Letoon – This is the site of the largest Lycian religious centre. Findings excavated here show that the city was founde in the 8th Century BC. The remains of the city, near the village of Kinik are scattered around the skirt of the hill where the Helenistic theatre is found.

Saklikent Canyon – The Esen stream passes through a deep seventeen klm long canyon where spectacular views can be had from the wooden bridges. It is also possible to wade up some of the waters of the canyon.

Kekova - the ruins of the sunken city of Battikent can be seen at Kekova Island. Also worth visiting is the ancient city of Simena (Kalekoy today), accessible only by sea. Marvellous views can be seen from the fortress built by The Knights of St Jean. and there is al;o a theatre hewed from the rock.

Myra and Demre - in Demre stands the famous church of St. Nicholas where he was buried and which has been rebuilt several times, first in 529 AD. At Myra, which dates back to the fifth century BC , remains of a Greco-Roman theatre, a baths complex and the famous Lycian tombs can be found.
