Wining and Dining in Kalkan
Kalkan boasts a wealth of restaurants to meet most requirements of taste and pocket. From sumptuous roof top dining to more basic but delicious traditional Turkish fare at ‘Lokanta’ restaurants, there is a wide variety of experiences to enjoy.
Most restaurants display their menus at street level where you can read about the dishes on offer before entering the restaurant. You may be invited to read these and explanations of specialities will be made; you will not be hassled however and ‘maybe another night’ will be sufficient to allow you to move on and investigate further.
Traditional dishes such as ‘Fainting Priest’ which is one of the many ways in which aubergine is presented (so named because the priest for whom it was made, fainted at the exquisite taste!) and delicious lamb, chicken or vegetable casseroles are widely available. Many restaurants display these dishes in a hot cabinet and the staff will be only too willing to describe the various options.
There are specialised fish restaurants, international menus and café bars too, some at street level, many on roof terraces or at the harbour side. Whichever you choose you can be assured of friendly and attentive service and a wealth of dishes from which to choose.
There are several bars too in the town, most playing music but thanks to strict laws, none of them are oppressively loud. Whether they are on the main street, between the shops and restaurants or, like The Kleo Bar right at the side of the town beach you will be assured of a friendly welcome. All sell the local beer ‘Effes’ and a selection of local spirits or the more expensive imported ones. Soft drinks, coffee and milk shakes are available, as well as cocktails and of course the local aniseed drink – Raki.
There are few places with such a number of top quality restaurants as Kalkan has to offer, so as we say in Turkey ‘afey ıt olsun! Enjoy your meal.
