Activities in and Around Kalkan

Energetic? Shopaholic? Sun worshipper? Interested in History? There is something for everyone in this beautiful section of Turkey’s turquoise coast.

A mere 15 minutes from Kalkan is Patara where there are historical remains from the 3 rd century BC. Lovers of history can visit these and nearby Xanthos and Letoon, all important sites in the history of Lycia. An English man Charles Fellows discovered the remains at Xanthos and extensive excavations followed.

Also at Patara is the beautiful 18km beach, judged to be one of the best beaches in the world. Closely protected to preserve the beauty and wildlife in the area, Patara will remain an unspoilt and amazing place to visit. Horse riding is allowed in one area of Patara and novice or expert riders can enjoy a ride through the sand dunes or a gallop at the water’s edge. Featured in many magazines and the subject of several TV travel features, horse riding at Patara is an experience not to be missed.

In the cooler months there are many opportunities for walking in the area. The Lycian Way starts at Kalkan and stretches of the walk can be enjoyed as well as walking in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains.

There are local markets at Fethiye and Kas, both towns worthy of exploration and sites such as the sunken city at Kekova and the amazing gorge at Saklikent. Further a field is Pammukale with calcified pools formed in the rocks and many other towns and villages well worth a visit.

Enjoy a Cruise

One of the best ways of getting to know Kalkan and surrounding area is to take a boat trip. Small and medium size boats leave Kalkan harbor at approximately 10 a.m. each morning and return in the late afternoon. Private boat parties may be arranged and the price may vary depending upon the number of passengers and the size of boat needed. "Moonlight" cruises can be arranged upon request and these are especially romantic during the full moon.

Watersports Kalkan Bay hosts several beach clubs all of which offer the usual fun, family watersport activities including tubing rides, water skiing, jetski and motorboat hire.

Try Scuba Diving The Kalkan Dive Centre, which operates from the beautiful Kalamar Beach Club.  Shore dives are taken in the crystal clear waters of Kalamar Bay which are abundant in marine life, including; rainbow wrasse, barracudas, sea bream, bonita, octopus, sea turtles etc. and antique amphoras. The calm waters of Kalamar Bay are suitable for inexperienced and first time divers.

If the water is not your thing why not try a once in a lifetime tandem paragliding experience. Watch the videos and book in the town, then travel with the instructors high into the hills for a flight of around 30 minutes above Kalkan to experience a unique view of the bay before landing safely near to the harbour.

Travel a little further afield to enjoy a thrilling day river canoeing on the nearby Xanthos River.  Experienced river guides take you downstream on a journey across ancient Lycian lands of lush nature, ending at Patara beach for a swim. A fun family day with a BBQ picnic lunch along the way, as well as a very enjoyable mud bath!

Or possibly, river rafting, another fun day out on the Saklikent River with your tube and paddle - set off from the mouth of Saklikent Gorge.  The water is actually quite shallow and very refreshing in the summer heat.

If any of these appeal, simply speak to us and we will arrange them for you!
